The students at Dunya school engage in six units of inquiry throughout the year. These units are designed to enable the students to construct knowledge and understanding of the world around them through meaningful and purposeful engagements relating students' own first hand engagements.
During the 2015-2016 school year Grade 1 students will inquire about the following themes.
Who we are - Rights and responsibilities
Where we are in place and time - Personal histories
How we express ourselves - Stories
How the world works - Simple machines
How we organize ourselves - Transportation systems

The students are currently doing "Who we are" unit where they learn and inquire about rights and responsibilities. All the shared and guided reading materials will be about Rights and responsibilities. The kids will inquire about individual's rights and responsibilities in the society, how rights and responsibilities contribute towards communities.
They will also understand their own responsibilities towards the community they belong. They will compare their own rights to those of adults, look through the changing rights and responsibilities as we get older.
